Join the movement! Across Colorado, physical and behavioral health settings have been engaged in a framework of best practices for suicide prevention. Zero Suicide is a key concept of the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, a priority of the Colorado Suicide Prevention Commission, and recently codified into Colorado law.
Zero Suicide is built on the foundational belief that suicide deaths of individuals under care within health and behavioral health systems are preventable, and has shown significant results at reducing suicide.1 This system level approach to quality improvement reflects a commitment to patient safety and the safety and support provided by clinical staff. The key elements of Zero Suicide include: leadership, training, screening and risk assessment, patient engagement, treatment, transition care, and quality improvement. Health systems that have implemented Zero Suicide have seen up to an eighty percent reduction in suicide deaths for patients within their care.
During the 2016 Legislative Session, the Colorado General Assembly passed Senate Bill 147, which encourages health care and other systems to adopt the Zero Suicide framework.
The Zero Suicide Academy™ is a two-day training for senior leaders of health and behavioral health care organizations that seek to dramatically reduce suicides among patients in their care. Using the Zero Suicide framework, participants learn how to incorporate best and promising practices into their organizations and processes to improve care and safety for individuals at risk. Zero Suicide faculty provide both interactive presentations and small group sessions, and collaborate with participants to develop organization-specific action plans. The objectives of the Zero Suicide Academy™ are to (a) provide organizations interested in adopting a Zero Suicide approach with the skills and information necessary to launch their effort; (b) create collaborative links between the organizations launching these initiatives in order to provide mentorship and support so that the perspectives, knowledge, and skills of each inform the work of the others; and (c) aid in developing implementation plans for the Zero Suicide initiatives at each participating organization. The Zero Suicide Academy™ is presented by the Education Development Center, Inc.
